Television Spec Scripts
Any staff writer worth their salt & vinegar chips knows the job is twofold:
Write to the show’s voice.
Bring your voice to the table.
Balancing these two ideas is tough, but writing spec scripts helps refine this talent. In order to hone that skill, I wrote the specs below. I am especially proud of my Barry script “Special,” which placed me as a finalist in 2020 for the CBS Writers Mentoring Program.
Please contact me for script samples.
What We Do In The Shadows
“Love Languages” - Nadja’s perfect gift for Laszlo forces her to face a past rival while Guillermo’s podcast gets its biggest (and first) guest - Nandor.
The Boys
“Santé, Motherf-!” - Starlight demands that Vought uses its medical research to aid the victims of the apartment building attack. Stormfront prods Homelander to lead while advancing her agenda. Meanwhile, Butcher brings Hughie on a secret mission. This spec was written to take place in Season 2.
Barry
“Special” - When a young Chechen mobster goes viral on the internet for saving a child, Barry sees parallels to his own relationship issues with Sally. The acting class tackles improv comedy. This spec was written to take place in Season 2.
The Good Place
“Agape, Philia, and Eros” - Eleanor faces her recently discovered past relationship and possible current feelings for Chidi while the demons force the humans to attend a neighborhood prom. This spec was written to take place in Season 2. I guess I really like the second seasons of shows.
Adventure Time
“The Deep, Dark, Dank Pit” - Finn and Jake accidentally destroy a tree, displacing its tiny residents. When Finn learns the princess of the tiny residents will be thrown into the Deep, Dark, Dank Pit in a ritual to guarantee the community a new home, he insists on saving them himself.
Modern Family
“When I Grow Up” - Phil is worried that his relationship with Luke is weakening when his son is not as excited as he is for The Sound of Music singalong at the Hollywood Bowl. Gloria faces Manny becoming a man when he insists on attending a high school career day (this was written in the early days of Modern Family). Jay and Claire settle an old score during a family game night with Alex and Haley.
The Office
“Election Day” - Michael is jealous of a former classmate’s run for town council while Dwight is intent on not celebrating his birthday with anyone except Michael.
